| Watched the Global Battle of Bands last saturday, interesting and exciting. Just saw the Joint U Band show, right now I have the feeling that it is not hell difficult to get on stage. Actually, I do not think we are so much different. They are on stage, I am in the audience. It is so close to reach but sometimes it seems so far away. The distance is the gut. They are willing to give what they have, to be naked, baring to be laughed at, despised at, jeered at. So now they can enjoy the pleasure of being cheered at, screamed at and sweating with. It isn't that far, I insist that. Besides the guts, I only need to make a few more attempts and improvement so that I can get on stage singing my music. 1. Skills - all I need is to attain a grade 7 or grade 8 level of guitar playing. And that's not unarchievable. I am already grade 5. All I need to do is to get familiarized with the scales, chords, playing speeds and practice more with the classic songs as study. 2. Performance - Playing rock music, and playing music on stage is more than making sounds. It is a performance involving your own body, your instrument as an extension of your body, and interaction with the audience. Your movement and posture should collide with every note of sound you are making. Watching live music is both audio, visual and sensual experience. With skills improved, I can get a better control of my guitar and thus getting a better performance. I shall start practicing with standing posture, releasing my strap putting my guitar lower. I shall start to shake my body along with music while playing it, banging my head, gripping my guitar. Having some tricks like jumping, turning around, throwing my guitar around my body and so on. Besides, I should also get interact with the audience. learning to bring up the atmosphere, say something boosting. Make Fun. Get the crowd clapping and screaming. The difference between amateur bands and rock bands is almost shown only with this aspect. 3. Fashion - I do not mean dressing like crown. I mean to get something which could show the spirit of your music, as well as enhancing your bodily movement. It is a part of the performance. We never see ballade dancers wearing T-shirts and jeans on stage. Skills + 20% Performance + 20% fashion + 10% = On stage |
